The US Air Force has withdrawn all its bomber aircraft from RAF Fairford, a key US Air Force base in the United Kingdom, citing heightened security concerns following suspected attack threats and ongoing investigations into potential Iran-linked terrorist activities.

Aviation observers reported that at least 10 B-1 bomber aircraft departed RAF Fairford, located approximately 160 kilometres west of London, for their home bases in the United States on Sunday, October 4, 2026. The Pentagon, the headquarters of the US Department of Defense, had not immediately disclosed the movement of the aircraft due to security reasons related to military activities.

Security incidents prompt withdrawal

The decision to withdraw the bombers came amid an investigation into a suspected plot targeting the Fairford base. On September 27, 2026, five British citizens were arrested after three suspicious vans were found near the base. They were investigated on suspicion of terrorist activity and violating explosives laws, though police later found petrol, an inflammable substance, but no explosives in the vans. All five individuals were subsequently released on bail.

Adding to the security concerns, on October 1, 2026, a 25-year-old British-Iranian dual national was also arrested near Fairford on suspicion of preparing terrorist acts. This individual was also later released on bail. In total, six people have been arrested in connection with these incidents.

Iran denies involvement

Andy Burnham, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, stated that Britain has “strong indications” of Iran’s involvement in the incidents targeting Fairford. However, Iran has denied any involvement, calling the accusations baseless.

RAF Fairford has long served as a crucial military base in Europe for US bombers, which have recently been used in US operations against Iran. The British government had previously granted the United States permission to use Fairford for actions against Iranian missile sites.

Ongoing US-Iran tensions

The withdrawal of the bombers occurs seven months into an ongoing war between the United States and Iran, which began in late February 2026 with US and Israeli actions against Iran. On Sunday, October 4, 2026, a commercial tanker was hit by an unidentified missile in the Strait of Hormuz, causing damage to its engine room. Also on that day, Mohsen Paknejad, Iran’s former Oil Minister, resigned, and Hamid Bovard was appointed as the acting minister.

Despite the bomber withdrawal, the United States maintains its military presence in the Middle East. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, is reportedly considering further options for action against Iran.

Future outlook and diplomatic stalemate

The investigation into the suspected terrorist plot at RAF Fairford is ongoing, with authorities exploring all possible angles, including foreign state involvement. Talks aimed at ending the war between the US and Iran remain deadlocked, with both sides entrenched on key issues such as nuclear development and the status of Lebanon.

Iran has maintained that the Strait of Hormuz will not be reopened until obstructions to Iranian commercial shipping cease and sanctions are lifted. Abbas Aragchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, stated on October 4, 2026, that there is no military solution to the US-Iran conflict, and only negotiations based on justice and fairness can end hostilities. Aragchi warned that Iran would respond with greater military force if Washington chose a path of new military confrontation. In recent weeks, the US has reportedly de-emphasized military action in favour of economic pressure.

The full details and conclusions of the investigation into the suspected terrorist plot at RAF Fairford have not yet been made public. The specific information supporting Prime Minister Burnham’s claim of “strong indications” of Iran’s involvement has also not been disclosed. The long-term impact of the bomber withdrawal on US military strategy in the Middle East and Europe remains unclear, as does the specific reason for former Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad’s resignation.
