Armed Police Force (APF) Inspector General Narayan Datta Paudel has directed personnel in Madhesh Province to take “ruthless” action against border crime and revenue leakage. The directive was issued on Thursday, Ashoj 15, 2083, during his inspection visit to the No. 2 Chhinnamasta Brigade Headquarters in Mahottari district and its subordinate units, including battalions, companies, border outposts, and security bases.

Inspector General Paudel instructed commanders in the region to enhance effective monitoring, control, and prevention of illegal activities in border areas. He emphasized the need for heightened vigilance, coordination, and responsibility in their operations. He also called for timely planning and effective deployment to achieve result-oriented work in controlling border crime and revenue leakage.

Addressing rising crime and cross-border challenges

During his visit, Paudel gathered information on ongoing border security efforts and contemporary issues from relevant stakeholders and local residents in border areas. According to APF Co-Spokesperson Shailendra Thapa, the Inspector General also inspected the Jatahi border point in Dhanusha district and met with local residents.

Police statistics indicate a rise in crime incidents across Nepal in recent years. Criminal activities in border areas, in particular, pose a significant challenge to national security. Drug trafficking remains a major concern in these regions.

Earlier, on Ashoj 12, 2083 (September 28, 2026), Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Bishnu Prasad Bhatta, chief of the APF No. 2 Chhinnamasta Brigade Headquarters in Mahottari district, highlighted the challenges of controlling smuggling, drug trafficking, and other border crimes along the open border areas of Bara district. DIG Bhatta had stated plans to increase surveillance, manage CCTV systems, and enhance coordination with the Indian Border Security Force (SSB) to curb illegal activities.

Community engagement and disaster preparedness

Inspector General Paudel further directed personnel to effectively implement the ‘Armed Police with Border Residents’ program. He stressed the importance of maintaining cordial relations with local residents living in border areas and ensuring the ease of movement for general citizens crossing the border.

Considering the monsoon season, Paudel also instructed that disaster management-trained personnel be kept on standby with necessary rescue equipment for immediate deployment in flood and inundation incidents. The Armed Police Force plays an active role in border security, internal security, supporting revenue collection, and disaster management.

Following Inspector General Paudel’s directives, the APF plans to intensify efforts to strengthen effective monitoring, control, and prevention of illegal activities in border areas, enhance the ‘Armed Police with Border Residents’ program, and maintain disaster management-trained personnel with rescue equipment on standby. However, detailed statistics on specific border crimes in Madhesh Province are not yet available. Further information on new strategies for border security and revenue leakage control, the current state of coordination with the Indian Border Security Force (SSB), and potential allocation of additional personnel or resources for border security in Madhesh Province remains unclear.
