The United States is expanding its military presence around Iran, with plans to deploy three aircraft carriers and two Marine landing groups to the region by the end of November 2026. This escalation comes as three Liberian-flagged oil tankers were attacked in the Strait of Hormuz on Tuesday, September 29, 2026.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a British maritime security agency, confirmed the tanker attacks on October 1, 2026. The incidents involved the tankers Al Ruwais, Mersin Prosperity, and Sinbad, which were struck by an unknown object approximately 8 kilometers (5 miles) off the coast of Oman. While the crews are reported safe, UKMTO stated that the full extent of the damage and environmental impact remains unknown.

According to Iran’s semi-governmental news agency, Fars News, the tankers were traveling in an “unauthorized route” and had their automatic identification system (AIS) transponders turned off, making them difficult to track.

The US military buildup includes the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, which departed San Diego for the Middle East on September 27, 2026. It was followed by the USS Makin Island Amphibious Ready Group, which leads an amphibious assault ship and includes the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit, departing San Diego on September 28, 2026. Currently, the aircraft carriers USS George Washington and USS George H.W. Bush, along with the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group, are already deployed in the Arabian Sea and the broader Middle East region.

Rising tensions and background

This increased military activity occurs amidst the ongoing “2026 Iran War,” which began on February 28, 2026, following a joint US-Israeli military attack on Iran. The United States initiated its largest military deployment to the Middle East since the 2003 Iraq invasion, citing Iran’s nuclear program and its suppression of internal protests.

US President Donald Trump stated in February 2026 that Iran had restarted its nuclear program and was developing missiles capable of striking the United States. The US has since maintained a naval blockade along Iran’s southern coast.

Tensions further escalated in early September 2026 when the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched ballistic missiles at US warships, prompting retaliatory attacks by the US on Iranian oil tankers. President Trump recently rejected a seven-day ceasefire proposal from Iran, which included reopening the Strait of Hormuz and resuming nuclear talks.

Warnings and future outlook

Iranian officials have issued strong warnings regarding the foreign military presence in the region. Mohammed Akraminia, spokesperson for Iran’s armed forces, stated that Iran is prepared for a confrontation with the US and would inflict greater damage on American forces if attacked. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Aragchi also indicated that foreign military forces near the region are at constant risk and that any further attacks would be met with retaliation.

The full expansion of the US military deployment, expected by the end of November 2026, could involve approximately 20,000 personnel and 150 combat aircraft. The USS Theodore Roosevelt is anticipated to replace the USS George Washington in the Arabian Sea. The temporary presence of three aircraft carriers will significantly enhance US commanders’ capabilities in terms of fighter jets, missile defense, and long-range strike options.

President Trump is reportedly considering further attacks on Iran after the mid-term elections on November 3, 2026.
