Police in Janakpurdham have arrested the mother of the primary suspect in a knife attack that killed one man and seriously injured another. Mohammad Irsad Khan, 22, was previously arrested for allegedly stabbing Amin Safi, 24, to death and seriously injuring Imtiyaj Rain, 25.
Khan’s 42-year-old mother, Saimun Khatun, was taken into custody for further investigation, according to Om Prakash Khanal, spokesperson for the District Police Office, Dhanusha. Preliminary investigations suggest the incident stemmed from old enmity, police said.
Details of the incident
The attack occurred on Thursday evening, around 7:15 PM, near Rahimpath in Sonarpatti Daha Chowk, Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City-5, Dhanusha. Both Safi and Rain sustained stab wounds to their chests and stomachs, police said.
Safi, a resident of Sonarpatti Daha Chowk, Janakpurdham Sub-Metropolitan City-5, died during treatment at the Provincial Hospital Janakpur. Rain, also from the same area, is currently receiving treatment at the same hospital, police said.
Police immediately launched an investigation after the incident, leading to the arrest of Mohammad Irsad Khan. The subsequent arrest of his mother, Saimun Khatun, indicates a broader scope of the ongoing investigation.
Security heightened for festivals
The incident has raised concerns about security in Madhesh Province, especially as major festivals approach. In response, the Madhesh Province Police have intensified security measures, planning to deploy over 7,000 security personnel across the province. Dhanusha district alone will see the deployment of 1,599 police officers, police said.
Additionally, 28 help desks will be established at various border checkpoints to facilitate safe and smooth movement of people during the festive season, police said.
Ongoing investigation
The District Police Office, Dhanusha, is continuing its investigation into the full circumstances surrounding the attack. While old enmity is cited as the preliminary motive, police are working to uncover the complete truth and determine if any other individuals were involved.
