The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA), the state-owned utility responsible for power generation, transmission, and distribution, has implemented special preparations to ensure a reliable, regular, and quality electricity supply for consumers during the Tihar and Chhath festivals. The NEA anticipates that domestic production will be sufficient to meet the maximum electricity demand during Laxmi Puja, a key day of Tihar. The NEA stated that its production, transmission, and distribution systems are being maintained efficiently, with technical staff on standby 24 hours a day to prevent any power supply disruptions. A meeting of the senior management team, chaired by NEA Executive Director Dirghayu Kumar Shrestha, was held to discuss preparations, system operations, and potential challenges during the festive period.Shrestha estimates that the maximum electricity demand on the evening of Laxmi Puja during Tihar will be approximately 1,700 megawatts (MW). This is an increase from last year’s maximum demand of 1,650 MW on Laxmi Puja. He projected that electricity production during the festival period would reach around 2,500 MW, which is 800 MW higher than the anticipated peak demand, ensuring ample supply to meet domestic needs. The NEA has instructed all relevant office chiefs to complete all necessary preparations to prevent power outages during the festival. Shrestha directed technical teams to be ready for immediate repair and restoration of services if any issues arise. Directives have also been issued to promptly complete pending inspections and maintenance of transmission lines and distribution systems to minimize potential disruptions. To address consumer grievances effectively, the NEA has instructed staff to regularly answer calls to the ‘No Light’ service and streamline complaint management. Consumers are also urged to use electricity safely during Tihar and Chhath, checking the condition of electrical appliances and wires, avoiding substandard materials, and seeking qualified technicians for repairs rather than attempting them themselves. For any power supply issues or complaints, consumers are advised to contact their nearest distribution center or the ‘No Light’ service.
Background
- Nepal has celebrated Tihar without load shedding since 2016. In the past, the country experienced daily load shedding for up to 18 hours.
- On Bhadra 26 (BS), a flood in the Bhotekoshi-Trishuli area damaged hydropower projects with a total generation capacity of 431 MW.
- Minister for Energy, Water Resources, and Irrigation, Biraj Bhakta Shrestha, had directed on Kartik 18 (BS) to ensure uninterrupted power supply during Tihar and Chhath festivals.
What happens next
The NEA will maintain continuous coordination between the System Operation Department (LDC), Grid Operation Department, and distribution centers to regularly monitor electricity demand and supply throughout the festival period. Technical and managerial preparations have been made to identify and resolve potential system issues promptly.
