The Nepali Rupee appreciated against the US dollar, Euro, UK Pound Sterling, Swiss Franc, and Singapore Dollar on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, according to the daily exchange rates set by Nepal Rastra Bank, the central bank. Conversely, the Australian and Canadian dollars saw gains against the Nepali Rupee.

For the US dollar, Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) set the buying rate at Rs 153.78 and the selling rate at Rs 154.38 for today. This marks a slight depreciation for the US dollar compared to the Rs 153.81 buying rate and Rs 154.41 selling rate that remained stable for four consecutive days from October 2 to October 5, as NM Khabar English reported earlier this week.

The Euro’s buying rate was set at Rs 172.32 and the selling rate at Rs 172.99, down from Rs 173.09 and Rs 173.77 respectively yesterday. Similarly, the UK Pound Sterling’s buying rate is Rs 203.32 and selling rate is Rs 204.11, a decrease from yesterday’s Rs 203.68 and Rs 204.48. The Swiss Franc also depreciated, with its buying rate at Rs 185.50 and selling rate at Rs 186.22, compared to Rs 185.59 and Rs 186.32 yesterday. The Singapore Dollar saw a minor dip, with buying and selling rates of Rs 120.12 and Rs 120.59 respectively, down from Rs 120.22 and Rs 120.69 yesterday.

In contrast, the Australian dollar’s buying rate increased to Rs 107.03 and its selling rate to Rs 107.45, up from Rs 106.97 and Rs 107.39 yesterday. The Canadian dollar also strengthened, with its buying rate at Rs 107.95 and selling rate at Rs 108.37, compared to Rs 107.93 and Rs 108.35 yesterday.

Role of Nepal Rastra Bank and Economic Context

Nepal Rastra Bank, as the central bank of Nepal, is responsible for issuing Nepali currency, regulating the banking and financial sector, maintaining price stability, managing foreign exchange, and acting as an economic advisor to the government. The Nepali Rupee maintains a fixed exchange rate with the Indian Rupee, meaning fluctuations in the Indian currency directly impact the Nepali Rupee. A stronger US dollar in the global market, often driven by increased demand or a robust US economy, typically weakens the Nepali Rupee, making imported goods more expensive and potentially straining foreign exchange reserves.

The NRB aims to manage foreign exchange and maintain price stability. On October 5, 2026, the central bank revised its foreign exchange regulations, increasing limits for foreign currency payments and exchange services for businesses and individuals. Furthermore, in its monetary policy for the fiscal year 2083/84 (July 2026-July 2027), the NRB announced a continuation of a flexible policy, citing a comfortable foreign exchange reserve position and a favorable macroeconomic outlook. The central bank stated that this approach aims to support high economic growth by maintaining a low-cost economy and boosting private sector confidence.

Future Outlook and Unanswered Questions

While Nepal Rastra Bank sets the benchmark rates, commercial banks are permitted to establish their own exchange rates, which may differ from the central bank’s daily figures. The NRB also reserves the right to revise its exchange rates at any time as needed. The immediate and specific reasons behind today’s particular fluctuations in the US dollar, Euro, and other currencies are not yet detailed. Similarly, the long-term impact of these exchange rate changes on Nepal’s import-export trade, remittances, and overall economy remains to be seen.
