Former President Bidya Devi Bhandari was sworn in as the senior vice-chairperson of the CPN-UML on Thursday. Party Chairman KP Sharma Oli administered the oath of office to Bhandari at the party’s central office in Chyasal.
Following the oath-taking ceremony, Bhandari participated in a Standing Committee meeting of the CPN-UML as a senior leader. This marks her formal return to active party politics after serving two consecutive terms as President of Nepal.
Appointment and approval
Bhandari’s appointment as senior leader was initially decided by the CPN-UML Central Committee meeting held from Assoj 5 to 8 (BS). Subsequently, the CPN-UML Secretariat meeting on Assoj 8 (BS) approved her nomination.
Return to active politics
Before becoming President, Bhandari served as a vice-chairperson of the CPN-UML. After her tenure as President, she renewed her party membership, but Chairman Oli had put her membership on hold. Oli reactivated Bhandari’s membership and brought her back into active politics when the party faced internal polarization.
