The Armed Police Force, Nepal, a paramilitary security body with its headquarters in Kathmandu, has launched a free bus service in Kathmandu Valley for three days to facilitate public movement during the Dashain festival.
Two buses began operating on Monday, October 19, 2026, and will continue until Wednesday, running from 8 AM to 6 PM daily. This initiative aims to address the scarcity of public transportation in the valley during the major festival.
According to Armed Police Deputy Inspector General and Spokesperson Netra Bahadur Karki, the free bus service is a recurring effort by the Armed Police Force to mitigate public transport shortages during Dashain.
Routes for the free bus service
One bus departs from the Armed Police Force, Nepal Headquarters, serving passengers along a route that includes Balaju, Naya Buspark, Koteshwor, Satdobato, and Balkhu.
The second bus also originates from the Headquarters and provides free service to passengers traveling through Sitapaila, Kalanki, Balkhu, Koteshwor, and Naya Buspark.
Background on Dashain and transport challenges
Dashain is the most significant festival for Nepalis, celebrated from the bright fortnight’s first day (Ghatasthapana) to the full moon day (Kojagrat Purnima) in the month of Ashwin. During this period, while many people travel to their hometowns, the number of public vehicles operating within Kathmandu Valley significantly decreases, creating inconvenience for residents.
Experts have highlighted the need for improvements in the quality of public transportation in Nepal.
