Health and Food Hygiene Minister Nisha Mehta announced on Sunday that the tender process for the Critical Care and Trauma Center in Dalkebar, Dhanusha district, has advanced. Minister Mehta stated that the tender-related documents have been signed by the Ministry of Health and sent to the relevant infrastructure body.During an inspection of the proposed site for the trauma center, Minister Mehta confirmed that there should be no further uncertainty about the project’s implementation. She emphasized that the project is now included in the government’s multi-year plan. The minister expressed confidence that the groundbreaking ceremony would take place soon, noting that the site preparations appeared suitable. The announcement comes after a long period of discussion and local skepticism regarding the construction of the trauma center. Residents of Dalkebar, Mithila Municipality-7, have expressed doubts about the project’s realization due to repeated delays. The federal government first allocated funds for the Dalkebar trauma center in the fiscal year 2078/79 (BS), and four bighas of land have already been purchased for the facility.Rajkishor Mahato, a member of the House of Representatives from Dhanusha-4, highlighted the need for tangible progress to build local trust. He stated that residents have received assurances for a long time, but only the commencement of construction would instill confidence. Mahato also noted that the trauma center would benefit citizens in Dhanusha and surrounding districts, particularly by providing timely treatment for those injured in road accidents on the East-West Highway and other serious patients.
Addressing Madhesh Province’s health needs
The construction of the Dalkebar trauma center is particularly significant for Madhesh Province, where health indicators remain challenging. Statistics from January 18, 2025, show that 67.9 percent of women aged 15-49 in Madhesh Province die during childbirth. Additionally, 29 percent of children under five suffer from stunting, 27 percent are underweight, 10 percent experience wasting, and 51 percent have anemia. Fifty-two percent of women of reproductive age (15-49) in the province are also affected by anemia. In response to these challenges, the Madhesh Province government has established the Madhesh Health Science Academy to improve access to healthcare and provide health education. As of October 9, 2026, the academy offers BSc Nursing, BPH, BMLT, and BNS programs and is preparing to launch MD MS classes soon. The province government is also constructing a 50-bed provincial infectious disease hospital in Jhitkaiya, Bara, with support from the social development minister.
Next steps and unanswered questions
Minister Mehta stated that the tender would be called, and construction work would begin once the necessary procedures are completed. However, she did not specify a definite date for the tender invitation, the groundbreaking ceremony, or the start of construction. The inspection was attended by Prem Prasad Luitel, the Chief District Officer of Dhanusha, and heads of security agencies.
