The Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Vikas Samiti, a committee under the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Civil Aviation, has set the most auspicious time for receiving Tika during Vijaya Dashami on Kartik 4 (BS) at 10:26 AM. Vijaya Dashami marks the main day of the Bada Dashain festival, when people receive Tika, Jamara, and blessings from elders.
According to Professor Shambhu Prasad Dhakal, chairman of the Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Vikas Samiti, while Tika can be received throughout the day on Vijaya Dashami, the 10:26 AM time is specifically designated for those who wish to observe the most auspicious moment.
The committee also specified that for the auspicious time, the elder giving the Tika should face east, and the person receiving it should face west. The tradition of Dashain involves worshipping Navadurga Bhavani and receiving Tika and Jamara as blessings from the goddess.
Significance and Family Reunions
Dashain is a national festival in Nepal, celebrated with family gatherings where members and relatives come together to receive blessings from elders. The festival also provides an opportunity for family reunions, as Nepalis living away from home for work, study, or other professions return to their ancestral places to celebrate.
Although Vijaya Dashami is the main day for receiving Tika, Jamara, and blessings, the tradition of receiving Tika from elders continues until Kojagrat Purnima. This year, Kojagrat Purnima falls on Sunday, October 26, 2026 (Kartik 8, 2083 BS).
Devi Visarjan and Navaratra Background
In addition to the auspicious time for Tika, the Nepal Panchanga Nirnayak Vikas Samiti has also determined the auspicious time for Devi Visarjan (immersion of the goddess). For Kartik 4, 2083 BS, the auspicious time for Devi Visarjan is 8:49 AM.
This year’s Navaratra, the nine-night festival preceding Dashain, began on Sunday, October 11, 2026 (Asoj 25, 2083 BS), with Ghatasthapana. The auspicious time for Ghatasthapana was 11:47 AM. Before performing Ghatasthapana, it was advised to perform rituals for the peace of Chitra Nakshatra and Vaidhriti Yoga.
During Navaratra, various deities are worshipped. Fulpati festival was observed on Saturday, October 17, 2026 (Asoj 31, 2083 BS), while Maha Ashtami was on Sunday, October 18, 2026 (Kartik 1, 2083 BS), and Maha Navami was on Tuesday, October 20, 2026 (Kartik 3, 2083 BS).
Kojagrat Purnima Activities
The Dashain Tika can be received until Kojagrat Purnima, which falls on Sunday, October 26, 2026 (Kartik 8, 2083 BS). On this day, the Jamara and Kalash that were placed during Ghatasthapana are immersed in a river or other water body. There is also a tradition of worshipping Mahalakshmi and staying awake throughout the night on Kojagrat Purnima.
