The global economy is projected to reach over $128 trillion by the end of 2026, an increase of approximately $20 trillion from 2023, according to the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) latest ‘World Economic Outlook (October 2026)’ report. The United States and China are expected to dominate this expansion, collectively accounting for more than 42 percent of the world’s total economic output. The US nominal GDP is projected at $32.64 trillion in 2026, while China’s is estimated to be $21.55 trillion.Amidst this global growth, Nepal’s economy is projected to reach $45.59 billion in 2026. This figure is slightly lower than the IMF’s April 2026 estimate of $45.84 billion. The IMF forecasts Nepal’s real GDP growth rate at 3.6 percent in 2026, a slight slowdown compared to the estimated 4.4 percent in 2025.

Strong External Sector and Declining Inflation

Despite an anticipated slowdown in domestic production, Nepal’s external sector is expected to remain robust in 2026. The current account surplus is projected to significantly increase to 13.9 percent of GDP, indicating a strong balance of payments. The IMF also projects Nepal’s GDP per capita to reach $1,548 in 2026, with inflation expected to decline to 3.1 percent. This anticipated decrease in inflation could lead to improved consumer purchasing power.

Global Challenges Impacting Economic Growth

The IMF’s October 2026 report projects a global economic growth rate of 3.1 percent, a slowdown influenced by factors such as the war in the Middle East, ongoing trade tensions, and the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) investments. The report highlights a widening gap between economies benefiting from AI and technology advancements and those facing higher import costs and weaker demand.Nepal, like other nations, is navigating these global challenges while striving to maintain its economic growth trajectory. The IMF publishes its World Economic Outlook twice a year, in April and October, providing economic projections for the next five years.
