North Korea announced Thursday it test-fired a newly designed air defense missile system the previous day to confirm its technical capabilities. The test, overseen by Kim Jong-sik, a member of the Central Military Commission, was conducted by the Missile Administration.

According to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the test proved the technical specifications and reliability of the new material and intelligent multiple guided mode of the projectile, as well as the air-defense missile system’s target identification and tracking capability and its detection information processing device.

On the same day, a firepower subunit of the long-range strategic cruise missile unit in the eastern area staged a strike drill. This drill used a long-range strategic cruise missile against a virtual airport target, KCNA reported.

South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) detected multiple missiles fired by North Korea toward the East Sea from the Sondok area in South Hamgyong Province early Wednesday. The JCS believes the missiles flew less than 300 kilometers and authorities are considering the possibility that they involved a close-range ballistic missile.

The missile launch occurred as Kim Yo-jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, issued statements this week rejecting a US investigation that blamed North Korea for stealing over $6 billion in cryptocurrency from Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. It also coincided with the US midterm elections, widely seen as a referendum on US President Donald Trump halfway into his second term.

The US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) announced on October 31, 2026, that North Korea was responsible for the theft of over $6 billion in virtual assets from Binance. Binance stated that the hack, which began in June 2026, was a sophisticated, multi-stage campaign involving social engineering, malicious software downloads, compromise of internal AI tools, and advanced transaction-authorization methods.

Background

  • North Korea has repeatedly conducted missile and weapon tests for years despite international sanctions and UN Security Council resolutions.
  • The November 4 launch followed a series of weapon-related activities, including previous short-range missile launches and announcements about other weapon systems.
  • On October 29, 2026, approximately $6.4 billion was stolen from Binance, marking the largest theft in crypto history, which Chainalysis attributed to the North Korean cybercrime group TraderTraitor.

What happens next

South Korea and the United States are conducting a detailed analysis of the North Korean missile launch. US intelligence agencies are working to track, freeze, and recover the stolen funds from Binance, and the FBI has published wallet addresses linked to the hack.

Why it matters for Nepal

The Government of Nepal condemned a North Korean missile test on September 15, 2017, for violating United Nations Security Council resolutions. In 2019, Nepal deported 12 North Korean citizens in an effort to implement UN resolutions, with three others still sought.
